The Scootering enthusiast scene is not a new thing. Since the 1950’s Scooters have been synonymous with freedom and youthful expression.
It’s important to understand the differences between the classic car
scene and the classic scooter scene. Our background is classic car
restoration and when we first started restoring scooters a few years
ago, we did not fully understand this difference and we proceeded to
restore all our scooters completely as original that is colour and trim
as they left the factory, this is NOT what most people want! |

We have learnt a lot about what the customer wants over the years- and also have a better understanding of the history of the Scootering scene old & new and the fashions of modifying the scooter and loading her with accessories. In Europe in the late 1950’s, young people wanted their own transport but were very limited in choice- due in the main to the struggling post war European economies. New cars were scarce and expensive- work was hard to come by- Naturally this whole generation of baby boomers wanted wheels, style and an identity. The MOD scene was born in the UK, similar movements happened the length and breadth of Europe. What a young wannabe MOD did – was to work hard and save up for a Scooter- Once the new scooter was received (generally thanks to the newly available credit or hire purchase schemes) it was time to go to work and personalize. Out goes the dull factory paint job- on with the deep metallic colour paint job. Finish off with as much chrome as possible, a big performance exhaust, add bigger wheels and tyres to increase performance and try and squeeze every ounce of extra power out of it! Top this off with smart Italian clothes, open faced helmet, parka jacket- and head to the beaches with your other cooler than cool mates……… This was the time (1957) when Harold McMillan, the British Prime Minister was famously trying to convince the UK public "most of our people have never had it so good". Perhaps the Pioneering MODS of the time were the first Brits to realize this - with their new found freedom of expression and identity. It was Europe’s version of the US 1950’s hotrod scene. In Honor of the above era- We have come up with the Harrington Custom Vespa range. We have carefully picked and chosen from the styles and accessories of this wonderful era- in some ways we have toned it down a little to suit modern tastes- but by all means you have a free hand with a Harrington scooters Vespa. We can add as many extras as you wish. The custom is based on the Vespa Super. A great scooter with improved performance, handling, braking and reliability when compared to the earlier (standard) Vbb sportique. |
